Gsieser Valley

The 22 km long Gsieser valley is a side valley of the Pustertal Valley in South Tyrol. Bordered by the foothills of the Rieserferner Group and the Defregger Alps in Austria, the wide, sweeping valley is blessed by endless hours of sunshine throughout the year. As soon as you cross the threshold of the valley, the breathtaking fir and spruce forests and lush green alpine meadows fill you with a sense of peace, a sensation that only gets stronger in the three beautiful Gsieser Valley villages of Pichl, St. Martin and St. Magdalena, places where everything still seems right in the world. As part of the Kronplatz holiday region, the Gsieser Valley is a holiday paradise for people who prefer peace and quiet to the clamour and commotion of the well-known holiday resorts of South Tyrol.

It’s during the summer months that you can really see the natural and original valley at its most beautiful. The countless Alpine pastures and rustic huts are within walking distance, even for novice hikers. The Almweg 2000 in particular, which leads past a few mountain-inn huts above the head of the valley, is one route which never fails to bewitch mountain hikers with the beauty of the surrounding countryside. Adrenalin-fuelled summit tours can be found in the mountains of the Rieserferner Group and the Defregger Alps at altitudes of up to 2,837 m. For leisurely hiking tours and scenic walks, the relatively flat Talblickweg offers a variety of routes, with entry points throughout the entire valley.
Mountain bikers and cyclists will find their dream tour in the Gsieser Tal. With reasonably level bike trails along the bottom of the valley, moderately steep MTB routes to the pastures and huts and muscle-taxing summit tours on the surrounding mountains, there’s a tick in every box.
Oh yes and ... join in the parties and have fun! That’s what we like to do in the Gsieser Tal! There’s no end to the festivals and events, and the legendary Gsieser “Almhüttenfest” Alpine Hut Festival, the Gsies fair and the culinary theme weeks at the “Zum Graf” Restaurant & Klein Fein Hotel add the cherry to the summer holiday cake here in the Gsieser Valley.

When winter comes to the valley, at an altitude of around 1,200 m, the countryside is nothing short of a winter wonderland. The snow-blanketed meadows and forests shimmer and sparkle in the rays of the sun, and the countless, well-maintained walking paths lure you out for a winter’s stroll. The 42 km long cross-country ski trails (classic & skating) in the Gsieser valley are well-known in the world of cross-country skiers, and you can access the perfectly groomed Sonnenloipen trails, which are part of the Dolomiti Nordicski cross country area, straight from the hotel doorstep. One particularly memorable experience is floodlit cross-country skiing: You can ski the St. Magdalena even in the dark of night. The highlight for cross-country skiers is the Gsieser Ski Marathon in February: Cross-country enthusiasts from all over the world have been making their pilgrimage to this unique cross-country event for 35 years.
The Pichl, St. Magdalena and Taisten ski lifts are ideally suited to families and beginners. Free of the hustle and bustle and crowds, you can venture out on skis for the first time with the help of professional ski instructors. The Kronplatz, South Tyrol’s No.1 ski resort, and the Sexten Dolomites ski resort, are just a few minutes’ drive from the Gsieser valley.
Ski tourers are also sure to get their money’s worth in the Gsieser Tal. From leisurely and easy-going through to challenging ski tours with steep mountain slopes and powder snow, you’ll find everything you could possibly wish for.
The winter culinary highlight in Gsies is the dumpling marathon in January, when the local restaurants serve up dumpling specialities in all shapes and forms along the full stretch of the Gsieser cross-country trail.
